DENVER — Martin Katz can drop the “interim” from his title. Katz, who since July had been interim dean of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, is now the official head of the law school, DU announced today.

“We are pleased to have Dean Katz lead the Sturm College of Law,” said DU Chancellor Robert Coombe says. “We are confident we have selected the right person to take us forward, working in partnership with the faculty, our alumni, and the regional legal community to develop the Sturm College into one of the premier law schools in the country.”

Katz spoke in October to Law Week Colorado about DU’s July bar passage rate, which has improved every year for first-time takers since 2004. He said that while he was pleased with the results of bar passage initiatives so far, “the two biggest initiatives we’ve taken — we won’t see the results of those until the July 2011 bar.”

The previous dean, Beto Juarez, announced almost exactly a year ago he would step down. Juarez is taking a year off to do legal research in Mexico and plans to return to DU as a law professor in fall 2010.
