DENVER — Weld County District Judge Gilbert Gutierrez will retire effective Aug. 22. Gutierrez was appointed to the county court in 1997 and to the district court in 2002. He was retained in two retention elections, bht he was not scheduled for a retention vote in 2010.
Gutierrez assumed his duties on the district court bench in January 2003. From 1997-2002, he served as county court judge, and from 1980-1984 he was an assistant district attorney. He was in private practice from 1984 to 1992 and a Professor of Sociology (Criminal Justice) at University of Northern Colorado from 1992-1996.
Six members of the 19th Judicial District Nominating Commission (commission member Henry Frey will not participate due to a scheduling conflict) will meet at the Weld County Courthouse to select nominees for the position on July 16. Nominees are then appointed by the governor.
