Alex Martinez Is Final Colo. Justice To Officially Seek Retention

The Colorado Supreme Court justices seeking retention: Michael Bender, Alex Martinez and Nancy Rice

LAW WEEK COLORADO

DENVER — All Colorado Supreme Court justices with terms ending in January who are not named Mary Mullarkey are officially running in November’s retention election.

Justice Alex Martinez’ declaration of intent to run for retention was processed last week by the Colorado Secretary of State’s office. Martinez joins justices Michael Bender and Nancy Rice, who had already declared their intent to seek another 10-year term. Chief Justice Mullarkey announced last month that she will step down in November, creating a vacancy on the court that will be filled by an appointee of Gov. Bill Ritter.

All state judges and justices whose terms are ending and who want to stand for retention have until Aug. 2 to file declarations of intent with the Secretary of State’s office. So far, 126 out of the 143 up for retention this year have said they will run; six, including Mullarkey and Court of Appeals Judge Sean Connelly, have bowed out; and 11 haven’t publicly declared one way or the other.
