LAW WEEK COLORADO
DENVER — Colorado Supreme Court Justice Nancy Rice is among the 23 state judges to file documents last week officially announcing their intent to run for retention this fall.
Rice joins Justice Michael Bender, who declared in May that he will run for retention. Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey is retiring in November and won’t seek retention. Justice Alex Martinez is the only justice up for retention who has yet to publicly announce whether he will run.
Including the four high court justices, 143 judges are eligible to run in retention elections this year. To date, 117 have announced they will seek retention, while five have bowed out. This leaves 21 judges who have made no formal announcement either way. The deadline for judges to file a declaration of intent to run for retention is Aug. 2.
