Lawyers Race Across The Sky In Leadville 100

LAW WEEK COLORADO

DENVER — Dodging buses while crossing 17th Street is the most running some lawyers will do. Not so for at least five Colorado lawyers who recently completed the Leadville Trail 100-Mile Run, known as “The Race Across the Sky,” which began on Saturday and ended Sunday.

Just over half of the 647 people who started the mountain race were able to finish under the 30-hour time limit. Jeff Beuche, 35, of Perkins Coie finished in fifth place, completing the course in just under 19 hours.

Eric Truhe, 35, of Eric Truhe PC finished in 12th place in a few minutes under 21 hours, and Christian Hendrickson, 34, of Sherman & Howard came in 24th with a time of 22 hours and 16 minutes.

Rounding out the legal pack was Kamlet Reichert’s Charles Bybee, 48, who ran the course in 26 hours and 26 minutes, and Rothberber Johnson & Lyons’ Doug Tumminello, 44, who clocked in just shy of 29 hours.

“I am actually recovering pretty well,” said the fifth-place Beuche on Thursday. “My feet are a bit of a mess, with blisters and the like, but it’s also pretty exhilarating to be done with it.”

The course is grueling, with elevations ranging from 9,200 feet to 12,600 feet above sea level. Most runners don’t sleep and some hardly even stop; Beuche said he only sat down for about two minutes. Like several of his lawyer-runner counterparts, this isn’t his first time completing the race. He also came in fifth in 2009, third in 2006 and 12h in 2005. His long-term goal is to run the entire course 10 times, he said, but he might skip next year.

Coworkers of lawyers who’ve completed the Leadville 100 tend to view the feat with a mixture of awe and bafflement. “Most people’s reaction is just disbelief that anybody could or would want to run 100-miles” all at once, Beuche said.
