$124M Verdict in Texas for 2005 Crash Near Denver

CORPUS CHRISTI–A Texas jury awarded a $124 million verdict against an El Paso, Texas-based bus company in a case involving an October 2005 van crash outside of Denver.

The award, the 12th largest in the country according to Bloomberg data, which, if collected, will be disbursed among family members and victims of the crash.

After four days of trial and less than four hours of deliberations, a jury in the 327th District Court in El Paso County, Texas found Los Paisanos Autobuses Inc. and its van driver Heriberto Flores-Garcia responsible for a van crash on I-76 near Denver, for failing to properly maintain the vehicle. Flores-Garcia was driving at 70 mph when his van slid from the road in snow before flipping over and striking a concrete embankment. Two passengers were killed and five others were injured.

Representing the victims were Texas attorneys Craig Sico and David Harris from Sico, White, Hoelscher & Braugh; Dennis Richard and Reagan Sahadi of Corpus Christi-based Wigington Rumley Dunn; Raul Steven Pastrana of Austin-based Pastrana Law Firm and Joseph Isaac of El Paso-based Scherr & Legate.
