DENVER — The office of the U.S. attorney for Colorado argued Monday that the federal law making it illegal to lie about having receiving military medals doesn’t violate the First Amendment because it doesn’t target legitimate free speech, the Associated Press reports.
U.S. District Judge Robert Blackburn in July ruled that the Stolen Valor Act is unconstitutional. The case involved Glen Strandlof, who was prosecuted under the law after falsely claiming to be an ex-Marine who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
The office of U.S. Attorney John Walsh is asking the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse the decision.
