Father’s Cold Case Closed By Son

By Ali McNally, LAW WEEK COLORADO

For former Greeley prosecutor Bob Miller, the most unbelievable coincidence in the brutal 1977 murder of Mary Pierce was that she was kidnapped in the one of most heavily-concentrated areas of law enforcement in the city.

The 7-Eleven where Pierce worked was in close proximity to two courthouses, the DA’s office and Greeley Police Department. Federal drug agents were also in the area. A police officer went there to buy a cup of coffee not even 20 minutes after Pierce was kidnapped, Miller said.

“Whoever did it had to do it under the noses of a lot of cops,” Miller, now managing partner of Perkins Coie’s Denver office, said.

Perhaps an even bigger coincidence was that his son Robb, who was barely out of diapers at the time of the murder, would close the case 33 years later.

“It was pretty emotional,” Miller said of his son’s work on the case. “I teared up a little while watching his closing arguments. It was pretty exciting to have him close the loop.”
