LAW WEEK COLORADO
DENVER — The University of Denver-based Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System will feature Iowa Supreme Court Justice Mark Cady as its keynote speaker next month at its National Conference on Evaluating Appellate Judges. The conference, Aug. 11-12 at DU’s Sturm Hall, will also include panel discussions on performance evaluation.
Cady saw three of his colleagues voted off the Iowa high court in last year’s retention election. The normally low-profile retention election was the focus of a massive anti-retention campaign prompted by the justices’ decision in a case that legalized gay marriage in the state.
Cady speaks at a dinner Aug. 11, which costs $45 to attend. The rest of the conference is free. Lawyers can get 9 CLE credits, including 1.2 ethics credits.
The panel discussions feature justices and judges, law professors, journalists and critics of the bench. Colorado panelists include judges Russell Carparelli and Rich Gabriel of the Colorado Court of Appeals; Jane Howell, executive director of the Colorado Office of Judicial Performance Evaluation; and Matt Arnold, who last year led the Clear the Bench Colorado campaign, which sought the non-retention of three justices.
