Attorney General announces one-year prison, four-year probation sentences for Former Western Slope District Attorney
DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today that a judge has sentenced Myrl Serra, the former District Attorney for the 7th Judicial District of Colorado, to one year in prison followed by 60 days in the Montrose County Jail followed by four years probation following his guilty plea in October 2011 to criminal extortion, a class-four felony, and unlawful sexual contact, a class-one misdemeanor, and his August 2011 conviction following a jury trial on a violation of his bail bond conditions, specifically a violation of a restraining order. The unlawful sexual contact charge involved three victims.
Following his conviction and plea — in which Serra acknowledged that sufficient evidence existed for a jury to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt — Serra reached an agreement with the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel in mid-December 2011to be disbarred and lose his license to practice law.
The Office of the Attorney General was appointed by executive order in September 2010 to oversee the special prosecution of Myrl Serra, who was District Attorney for the 7th Judicial District of Colorado at that time. First Assistant Attorney General Robert Shapiro handled the prosecution of Serra. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation assisted the Office of the Attorney General with the case.
The 7th Judicial District covers Montrose, Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, San Miguel and Ouray counties.
