Legal Lasso: Local Woman With Ties To Legal Community Lives Her Dream

YOU GO GIRL! Rachel Hurst, a receptionist at the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, is living her dream this week at New York Fashion Week. The budding designer was discovered by insiders at Mercedes Benz and Diet Pepsi who are hosting a design challenge for three up-and-coming fashion designers during this week’s fashion events. Hurst was given a few days to design and implement three different looks which will appear tomorrow alongside the other two designers’ works. Watch Hurst tell her story to 9News here.

FORGIVE ME FATHER/YOUR HONOR: Gov. Hickenlooper yesterday announced David Lobato, a former priest and current public defender, as Pueblo’s newest judge. Lobato, a deputy state public defender in the Pueblo office, succeeds Judge Ernest Ruybalid, who is retiring. The 10th Judicial District includes all of Pueblo County. His appointment is effective immediately.

IN OTHER JUDICIAL NEWS: Montrose County Court Judge Diana Barber is retiring. Her post, which is part time and pays $24,000 a year, does require a law degree. Barber graduated from Northern Illinois University Law School.  She spent 16 years in private practice in Illinois before moving to Colorado, where she worked for two years for Colorado Legal Services in Durango.  Judge Barber was appointed to the Montrose County Court bench in 2006.

IN NATIONAL LEGAL NEWS: The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that California’s Prop 8, which banned marriage equality, was unconstitutional.

FORT COLLINS CITY COUNCIL WORKING TO SHUT MMJ SHOPS: Medical marijuana businesses are a step closer to officially disappearing from Fort Collins, reports the Coloradoan. The City Council on Tuesday gave initial approval to a set of ordinances that repeal elements in city code that allow for the licensing and operation of medical marijuana dispensaries and grow operations.

Romney won all metro-area counties with the exception of Adams. “Romney spin can’t cover stinging defeat,”beltway paper The Hill headlined the story. But make no mistake: the biggest winners are TV stations in Maine, Arizona, Michigan and Washington — the states leading up to the March “Super Tuesday” primaries.
