Legal Lasso: Appeal In Lobato Filed

STATE LAYS OUT LOBATO APPEAL: Last year’s decision that found the state school finance system unconstitutional should be overturned because it actually ignores the state constitution and “collapses” legislative and executive roles into the judiciary, Attorney General John Suthers argued in a brief filed with the Colorado Supreme Court late Wednesday afternoon.

ANOTHER CHANGE FOR THE COURT OF APPEALS: Yesterday’s announcement was that Judge Robert Russel will be leaving the bench to return to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where he’ll take up his old post at chief of the appellate division. Russel’s last day will be in November, so the nominating committee for his replacement has not yet set a date for choosing replacements.

MORE GOOD PATENT NEWS: The University of Colorado Law School has been selected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to join a law clinic pilot program in patent law. Starting this fall, CU law students will be able to get real-world experience practicing patent law before the Patent and Trademark Office under the guidance of a faculty clinic supervisor.
