Rich Baer Returning To Denver As GC For Liberty Media

Richard Baer, former general counsel of Qwest Communications and current general counsel at UnitedHealth Group, is returning to Denver to be the top lawyer for Liberty Media Corp.

Baer will officially leave the Minnesota-based insurance company on Jan. 1  after a little more than a year as its general counsel, according to a UnitedHealth press release. He is coming back to Denver where he was most well-known for his 10 years as general counsel and chief administrative officer at Qwest, now CenturyLink.

“We have the highest regard for Rich’s legal and business acumen, personal integrity and generosity of spirit, the exceptionally hard work he has devoted to our enterprise and his personal sacrifice spending time away from his family,” said Stephen Hemsley, president and chief executive officer of UnitedHealth.

Marianne D. Short, managing partner at Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, is replacing Baer at UnitedHealth.

Liberty’s conglomerate includes the movie channels Starz and Encore; a 49 percent share of satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM Radio; and investments in concert company Live Nation Entertainment, bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc. and media companies Time Warner and Viacom. It also owns the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
