Wilson Elser Attorney Will Be Honored For Pro Bono Work

Suzanne Meintzer, an associate in the Denver office of Wilson Elser, will receive the 2012 Angela Lujan Ogle Social Justice Award from the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence.

Meintzer, who has been providing pro bono services to SPAN for 2 1/2 years, has been selected to receive this award for her work on behalf of SPAN’s clients overall and specifically one client whose case was particularly difficult.

In that case, Meintzer was able to convince the Administrative Appeals Office to reverse an earlier denial by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to grant the client, a woman being abused by her husband, a visa under the Violence Again Women Act. The act allows certain spouses, children and parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents to file an immigration petition without the abuser knowing.

Almost two years after filing the original petition that resulted in a denial, Meintzer’s client’s petition was approved, and she obtained a work authorization and was placed in deferred action, meaning that she can remain in the United States without fear of deportation.
